Sitting atop a high hill in Goraberezhouli, part of Chokhatauri Municipality, Eristavi Fortress-Hall is a testament to nobility and ancient military might. Built during the XVII-XVIII centuries, this fortress wasn’t just for show — it echoed the strategic prowess of the time. Picture imposing walls, each 5 meters (16.4 feet) high and 25 meters (82 feet) long, that once resonated with the sounds of artillery. Within these walls, one would find an agricultural building and a cellar, tangible traces of the nobility that once thrived here. Just to its east, a semi-ruined chapel still stands, its silent structure testament to the passage of time.
Adjacent to the fortress is a dendrological forest-park, a verdant enclave bursting with rare, centuries-old plants. The wisdom of a three-century-old oak, the towering grace of a giant sequoia, and the unique presence of pencil trees, candy trees, and the Japanese strawberry tree showcase nature's longevity and splendor.
As travelers make their way from Chokhatauri to Goraberezhouli, a brief two-kilometer (about 1.24 miles) detour leads to gates that usher them into this garden oasis. This garden, spanning a hectare, was once the crown jewel of the Eristavebs (the Dukes) and has been honored as a national monument—one of seven in Guria. Nestled within this lush landscape is the protective abode of the Eristavi family. Guidemarkers dot the area, sharing tales of a fortress dating back to the XVII century, hinting at a bygone residential house, and the existence of a 22-meter (approximately 72 feet) artesian well.
Amidst the foliage, visitors might chance upon a tea bush, a living piece of Georgian tea history. The Eristavi family were trailblazers in this aromatic endeavor. Mikhail Eristavi, back in 1864, showcased his tea brewing skills through primitive techniques at agricultural exhibitions. Eristavi Fortress is more than just a location; it's a tapestry of stories spanning centuries. With restoration work underway, its historical essence promises to shine even brighter, beckoning visitors to immerse themselves in Guria's rich past.
